"Learning to Listen"- ensemble39 presents Prokofiev's Quintet, Op. 39

If you've ever been curious about chamber music and want to get a firsthand glimpse of the technique and rehearsal process that goes on behind the scenes of a top notch instrumental ensemble, check this out:

Ensemble 39, a quintet of young performers from the Curtis Institute of Music is presenting an open rehearsal and free performance of Prokofiev's Quintet Op. 39 on Saturday February 4th at 7:00PM in the Goodhart Music Room at Bryn Mawr...

ensemble39 is dedicated to expanding audiences for classical music through innovative methods of presentation, collaboration, and programming. Founded in spring 2011 by a group of musicians at the Curtis Institute of Music, we share a common energy and passion for chamber music and performance at the highest level.

Free admission, refreshments served. Learning to Listen (L2L) events
are held in a salon-like atmosphere with fine music and tasty refreshments. L2L
was established to honor Elizabeth Coleman Mooney ’48 and Susan Norton Coleman ’45 who
wanted future students to derive the same great pleasure from music that they did.
“Ensemble39 was drawn to Prokofiev's Quintet, Op. 39 for its dynamic characters, which range from the deranged to playful, the humorous and dark. Our initial love for the piece inspired us to delve into the Quintet's complex history. The work was originally commissioned for a ballet company that found itself bankrupt during the first performance tour of the piece. The evolution of Prokofiev's Quintet from a ballet score to a concertpiece continues to inform our i interpretation, understanding, and presentation of the work, making for a unusual and exciting performance.”

Visibly Invisible lecture series

VISIBLY INVISIBLE

Beginning on February 7, 2012, Design Philadelphia and The University of the Arts present a 4-part lecture series on the relationship between history, design and technology. These lectures will bring to the forefront the environment and world that we live in, but all too often ignore.

Regina Lee Blaszczyk
Tuesday, February 7
6-7.30 pm
From Parlor to iPhone: Our Gadgets, Our Identities
An award-winning design historian, Blaszczyk explores the hidden meanings of the things we use every day. Her whirlwind tour of 150 years of consumer culture highlights the invisible links between the Victorian parlor and the I-want-it-now culture of Apple, Facebook and Twitter. Our ancestors used “cultural hardware” like furniture and bric-a-brac to express themselves, while we use “cultural software” like eBooks, videogames, and apps to create personal space. The technology is different, but the impulse to personalize one’s surroundings is the same.

Thaddeus Squire
Tuesday, February 21
6-7.30 pm
Hide and Seek
Founder of Hidden City Philadelphia – festival, online magazine, tour company – Squire will address the yearning for history in pop culture: from the prison fantasies of Piranesi to Mayan expedition drawings, and Indiana Jones, National Treasure and Tomb Raider. And from the retro-chic of Restoration Hardware and Anthroplogie to online gaming, and the emerging photo genre of “ruin porn”.

Dan Marcolina
Tuesday, March 20
6-7.30 pm
Revealing the Obvious
Mad App Alchemist and internationally recognized designer and photographer, Marcolina is author of the critically acclaimed book and iPad series “iPhone Obsessed”. He will expose how the combination of picture choice and multiple app processing can transform everyday snapshots into remarkable statements. Booksigning following the lecture.

Cynthia E. Smith
Tuesday, April 3
6-7.30 pm
Design with the other 90%: Cities
With her recent exhibitions at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the United Nations, Smith helped spark international dialogue on the opportunities to utilize technology and design to help poorer communities “leapfrog” into the 21st century. Traditionally designers had focused on the 10% of the population that could afford their goods and services. Now, a new wave of designers, architects and engineers is working to solve the world’s most critical problems as urban populations in the developing world grow at unprecedented rates. Book signing following lecture.

Registration is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.
Each lecture will take place at The University of the Arts, Hamilton Hall on 320 S. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA.

Unsustainable - Jay Hardman

Unsustainable
Jay Hardman
January 6th through January 28th
Opening Friday, January 6th, 2012, 7 - 10 pm
Space 1026 is pleased to announce Unsustainable, the first solo exhibition by Philadelphia based artist Jay Hardman. Drawing from his experience within the construction industry, Hardman creates small scale sculptures and installations that examine contemporary building practices and their effect on communities. Recognized primarily for his cake sculptures which focus on landscape this new body of work directs attention towards the construction site. Produced with common building materials and utilizing a miniature-hobbyist's aesthetic these works exhibit both an architectural formalism and quaint domesticity that merges sculpture and model-making. Please join us for an opening reception with the artist on First Friday, January 6th, 2012 at
Space 1026.

Jay Hardman is a new member of Vox Populi and has shown nationally and locally including exhibitions at Fleisher/Ollman Gallery, Little Berlin, Projects Gallery, The Philadelphia Art Alliance and Arcadia University, as well as at Art Centers and University Galleries in Oklahoma, Michigan, Nevada and New York State.

*******************
Space 1026 was founded over a decade ago by a handful of artists and tricksters who organize rowdy public events and outrageous installations at their building and at other institutions. At the heart of Space 1026 is a communal screen-printing workshop and gallery space for monthly exhibitions by local and international artists.
